Tim
Rutili
is a musician and visual artist who explores dreamlike spaces
and structures in both mediums. Forming Califone in 1998,
he serves as the group's principal songwriter, lyricist
and vocalist. His photographs and films serve as a chronicle
of over 15 years as a musician on the road with Califone,
as well as its former incarnation Red Red Meat. Particularly,
his use of the Polaroid and super-8 film mediums capture
the fabric of these kinetic yet slightly veiled scenarios
that so often result from the disorientation of constant
travel.
His
latest film "Three Legged Animals" was
recently screened at the Getty Museum as part of Distributed
Memory: projected images and live music. This film
was based on a song from Califone's latest album "Roots
& Crowns" released on Thrill Jockey records.
Rutili's
installation, 500 polaroids, was part of You
are My Sunshine/You is My Sunshine at Canada Gallery
in New York 2003. He also contributed photographs, collage
and paintings to Series 2 & 3 at Brooklyn Fireproof
in 2004.
Rutili's
unorthodox recording studio craft has contributed to albums
by Ugly Casanova, Modest Mouse, Boxhead Ensemble, Freakwater
and Joan of Arc among many others as well as film soundtracks
for "Stranger than Fiction", "30
Days of Night" and numerous television shows and
documentaries.
